GF Review: Greasy Spoon, Stockholm

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Overall this all day breakfast joint was a great catch to find in Stockholm! However you GF foodies need to be wary... Read to find out why!

This week my Swedish adventure came to end, I would highly recommend Stockholm for anyone on a Gluten free diet, everyone speaks great English and there is good common knowledge of what Gluten is.

For my final farewells, before returning back to the UK, me and a group of friends visited ‘Greasy Spoon’ in Odenplan. The restaurant had a modern take on a classic British institution, yet in my opinion, the interior was very much Swedish and minimalistic. We arrived around 9AM on a Saturday morning and there was already a queue at the door, at this point we knew we had made a good choice. It wasn’t too long before we were seated, which was surprising consider the size of our group (10 people). The staff were very welcoming and friendly and ensured there was calm atmosphere despite how busy and full the place was. There was delicious range of breakfast, brunch and lunch items and are available all day. The menu was relatively small, but in addition they offer a specials menu that changes on weekly basis.  Gluten-free items were marked on the menu and GF bread was an option.

However, I noticed a HUGE FLAW regarding their ‘GF options’. The Buckwheat pancakes advertised as Gluten free, were made with oat milk, this was written in the small print and could have been easily missed. Oats are not Gluten free and can contain Gluten, for someone with coeliac disease/severe allergy this could have caused MAJOR PROBLEMS.

Luckily, I noticed this and decided to go with the ‘Pink Rosti’. This was smoked salmon on a homemade potato rosti (made with corn flour) topped with poached egg and beetroot hollandaise sauce. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal, the presentation was perfect however one poached egg was lovely and runny but the other was hard and over cooked, this was a shame and made me question how my meal was prepared.

The Service was somewhat slow, but I was in no rush so didn’t mind but if you have somewhere to be I would be wary of the time. Nevertheless, the place was great value for money, especially for Stockholm and had a great vibe. Most of friends ordered the full breakfast which looked insane and I wish I had time to visit there again to try it myself!

Despite the misleading pancakes, I would definitely recommend ‘Greasy Spoon’, let me know if you do visit yourself!

All the best, Leia

I was disappointed with their Full Veggie meal! Next time, i'll have to go with pancakes or something because those looked really good

#2 I had the pancakes when I went and really enjoyed them! They give you a nice sized cup of maple syrup as well so you can make them extra sweet 🙂

#5 Thank you! 🙂 I will bring him then.

One more thing, do you think we could be in and out in 1,5 hour if we are there at 9? We will be going before my friends work shift.

My friend has Celiac disease and where thrilled when I suggested this place based on this review. 🙂

#4 On the weekends they usually have a long line. I would get there before nine to make sure you get a table. But once you have been seated they can be quite fast.
